Warrumbungle Shire Council invites the local community to celebrate the official opening of the Warrambul Warruwi Sky River Path on Saturday, 15 March, from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm at Neilson Park, Coonabarabran.

“We are thrilled to witness the community come together and experience the beauty of the Castlereagh River along the new Sky River Path,” said Councillor Kathryn Rindfleish, Mayor of Warrumbungle Shire. “The Castlereagh River Rehabilitation Project has not only improved access to the river, but also strengthened our connection to its ecological and cultural importance, all while engaging locals in meaningful environmental action.”

In collaboration with the Coonabarabran Local Aboriginal Land Council and the Flying Mice Elders Group, Warrumbungle Shire Council has developed the Sky River Path, which includes seating, interpretive signage, and public art. This initiative is part of the broader Castlereagh River Rehabilitation Project.

The event will feature local community groups and businesses, including Landcare, the 2357 Development Group, Coonabarabran Community Garden, Bilby Blooms, Coonabarabran Seed Library, The Forest Shop, Lil’ Coffee Cart, and Coonabarabran Netball Association.

Activities on the day will include the Sky River Path parkrun at 8:00 am, followed by a Reborn Fitness session at 9:00 am. Volunteers will also be working along the creek inlet, weeding and mulching native plants that were planted during last year’s community river days. The official opening ceremony will take place at 10:00 am, and attendees can enjoy plant stalls, a breakfast BBQ, coffee, face painting, art activities, and much more.

The Castlereagh River Rehabilitation Project has focused on enhancing the river’s health and ecological condition, with efforts including the removal of invasive species and the revegetation of native plants. The project also covers river management planning, instream habitat mapping, water monitoring, waste traps, and a cultural survey, alongside the creation of the new river path, signage, and artwork.

This project has been made possible with funding from the Australian Government’s Murray-Darling Healthy Rivers Program and the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program.
