Castlereagh River Rehabilitation

The Castlereagh River Rehabilitation Project will improve the health and ecological conditions of the Castlereagh River instream and riparian habitats. It will encourage community involvement, improve access to the river and increase awareness of the river ecology and its cultural significance.

Council has received funding for the rehabilitation work, which includes 20 hectares of the Castlereagh River riparian zone, in the town of Coonabarabran NSW. Areas of woody and soft stem weed will be removed and revegetated with local riparian grasses, shrubs and trees.  A River Management Plan, instream habitat mapping, water monitoring and a cultural survey will be completed. A new path, signage and waste traps will also be installed.

Coming soon ...... the Sky River Path, “Warrambul Warruwi” at Neilson Park Coonabarabran.

Council in partnership with the Coonabarabran Local Aboriginal Land Council and Flying Mice Elders Group is creating the Sky River Path, “Warrambul Warruwi”, beside the Castlereagh River in Coonabarabran. Riverside seating, interpretive signage, a sculpture and a mural have been installed. Three more public art pieces will be installed over coming months to complete the walk.

Artists Shannon Stone, Warwick Keen, Daniel Evans and Mark Ray Have created art installations to feature on the walk.

Recently, The Australian National University - Siding Spring Observatory supported this community project by generously donating their expertise and equipment to drill 900mm long holes into carved poles, created by artist Warwick Keen, to prepare the poles for installation in Neilson Park.
