Heritage
Heritage includes the places, objects and stories that we have inherited from the past and want to protect for future generations. It gives us a sense of our history and provides meaningful insights into how earlier generations lived and developed. It also enriches our lives and helps us to understand who we are.
Our rich heritage represents many historical themes including Aboriginal, convict, migration, regional development, industry, architecture, creative arts, LGBTQI+ and much more.
The heritage we protect and celebrate takes many forms, including:
- built
- archaeology
- maritime
- moveable
- natural
- cultural landscapes
- intangible.
Warrumbungle Shire Council aims to protect heritage items and places through Heritage Studies, Education and Small Heritage Grants to ensure the heritage of the Shire is kept for generations to come.
Small Heritage Grants
Warrumbungle Shire Council is inviting owners of heritage items or buildings to apply for funding through Council’s Small Heritage Grants, providing dollar for dollar funding to carry out repairs and restoration works on local heritage items and buildings.
Applications will not be accepted on properties on which rates are unpaid.
These grants are a great opportunity for people with heritage buildings to undertake repair works to ensure that the integrity of the heritage building remains.
Grants are offered on an annual basis subject to funding from Office of Heritage.

Heritage Study Reports
Warrumbungle Shire Council is made up of the amalgamation of the former Coolah Shire Council and Coonabarabran Shire Council. Previous studies were completed on both former Shires in 2005, 2006. In February 2014 a study of the Baradine Main Street was also completed.
Council has followed the Guidelines for the Community-based Heritage Study that are issued by the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage. During the process of compiling the study, Council’s Heritage consultant contacted many of the owners of the properties. Letters were sent to the owners of the 169 nominated heritage properties for inclusion in the Heritage Study. Owners had the opportunity to write to Council is they wished not to be included in the Heritage Study.
Properties listed in the Heritage Study will be listed in Council’s Local Environment Plan (LEP) as heritage items as resolved by Council at the June 2019 Ordinary Meeting of Council, (Resolution 443/1819). If the property was nominated it will be listed on the LEP.
